Preparing for a Chimney Sweep

Preparing for a chimney sweep is very simple just…

• Make sure we have a clear space around and have access to the firebox.
• Make sure that the firebox is cool or only slightly warm.
• Make sure that there are not any active embers.
• Make sure the firebox is clean of ashes and charcoal.
• Make sure there is adequate parking near the house for our vehicle.

If you have not cleaned the fire box prior to the chimney sweep arriving then we will need to clean the fire box prior to the chimney sweeping.

A clean firebox helps make the full process a cleaner process.

If the firebox is not cleaned, then our chimney sweepers will clean it!  We will not start a job without a clean firebox!

If we are required to clean the firebox then there will be an additional charge for this service.

And that is all there is involved in preparing for a chimney sweep it is that simple.

Cleaning Your Firebox

If you prepare and clean the firebox prior to our arrival, make sure there are no active embers in the ashes and place the ash in a steel sealed garbage can away from other combustible material.  We know of one case in Sun Valley where the ashes were put in a non-metal garbage can and there were still active embers and it ended up catching fire and burning the house down

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends you have your chimneys, fireplaces, vents and solid fuel-burning appliances (think pellet or wood stoves) inspected at least once a year. This is probably true if you only use your fireplace occasionally, on the coldest winter nights. If you fire it up several times a week, you may want to arrange more frequent inspection and cleaning.
